I’m fixing the previous homeowner’s mistakes. I have to repair the face of a doorway (there are no doors) with new boards. Does it matter if I do option A or option B, function-wise? It’s going to be painted and not structural. Second question: if B is the preferred option how would I go about doing it? It’s a 1/2”x6” board

The brown had the black one by the neck. A neighbor kid startled them and the brown one released the the other. The black one then disappeared into some tall grass at the back of the yard. The brown one stayed relatively close to the house. That’s all. Just interested in what species they could be and should I be worried about my dog being in the backyard?
