I created a free visual novel graded reader for beginners.

Hi! I'm a Chinese teacher, and I've always had a hard time finding immersive reading material that's actually fun for my students, especially beginners. So I ended up making some myself.

It's an interactive graded reader that uses around 150 of the most common Chinese words. You play as a girl trapped in a room, searching for clues, solving puzzles, and making choices that lead to different endings.

It includes pinyin, tap-to-lookup words, English translations, native audio, and works well on mobile.

You can try it here: https://gradednovel.com/reader/no-escape-05

I've also made more stories for higher levels.

Hope you enjoy it! Feedback is always welcome.

I made an interactive Chinese graded reader inspired by visual novels and escape rooms

Beginner graded readers can be pretty boring, so I decided to make one as a visual novel instead.

You play as a girl trapped in a hotel room. To escape, you'll need to interact with objects, collect items, solve puzzles, and make choices that lead to different endings.

Every sentence is in Chinese with optional pinyin, tap-to-look-up definitions, English translations, and native audio.

The current story is written mostly using the 150 words from the old HSK 1 vocabulary list and is over 1,000 Chinese characters long. I've also created versions using New HSK 1–5 vocabulary.

I'd love to hear your feedback.

I built an interactive, beginner-friendly HSK graded reader where you solve an escape room

Graded readers often get a bad rap for being boring, especially at lower levels. That’s why I wanted to create something that beginners could actually enjoy.

Using mostly the 150 words from HSK 2.0 Level 1, I’ve crafted a story about a girl who’s trapped in a room and needs to find her way out. The story is over 1,000 characters long. To progress, you’ll need to interact with objects, find clues and items, and make choices that lead to different endings. Everything is written in Chinese, with pinyin, word look-up (by tapping the word), English translations, and voiceovers.

The story is mobile-friendly and has been written and proofread by a native speaker (me, lol).

You can play it here: https://gradednovel.com/reader/no-escape-05

I’ve also created versions with words from

New HSK Level 1

New HSK Level 2

New HSK Level 3

New HSK Level 4

New HSK Level 5

I hope you enjoy it! If you have any feedback, feel free to let me know!
