How hard is it to boomerang back?

Hi everyone. I'm currently an SDE. I've been here for a year and a half and have sorta had some bad luck. Bad manager at the start. Found a good manager. Team got laid off. Joined back to a bad manager and a team I don't really care about with no scope for a promo.

I'm also extremely burnt out and tired.

I tried internally moving and I got an offer from a high stress S3 team I said no to. I ended up getting rejected from a pretty good role I really wanted and I'm kind of defeated at this point. Internal roles are still hard to get as an SDE since all the people who were internally searching during layoffs are now competing.

I've also just taken a lot of hits in 2026 from getting pretty sick, to failing some external job interviews. I'm sort of tired.

I was wondering how hard it is to quit for a while and join back in 6-8 months if I don't find anything external? I have no Visa constraints and I live in the US.
