What’s wrong with this tree?

Bought the house in October and never saw the tree with leaves on it, replaced septic system and installed leech field about a week ago right next to the tree. The base was buried for a week or so while they were digging out the field, they also potentially damaged some roots while digging. I plan to build a retaining wall against the edge of the leech field to keep the grade around the tree where it was before.

Many leaves look unhealthy now that it’s blooming, I’m also noticing a big hole and scar on the trunk. Is there anything I could do to help this tree survive?

I’m in Massachusetts.
