Someone who works in life insurance answer me this question

My dad just had a stroke, he’s over 70. He was in intensive care for a month, then rehab, and he just got home and needs full time care and he’s on a bunch of stroke related meds. He’s survived but the five year survival rate is not great.

Now, after he’s checked out, multiple times a day he’s getting calls from people selling term life insurance, he informs them that he just had a stroke and wouldn’t qualify but they press press press for him to apply.

My questions are

How did they get his information/why are they calling him now after the hospital stay?

Why would an insurance company underwrite a policy on him? There’s basically 90% chance he dies in 5 years. I imagine the premiums would basically be the same as the benefit amount.

I’m worried there’s something more nefarious going on, some kind of scam etc. the problem is that he’s still mentally recovering and is susceptible to this kind of thing, but his phone is the only he has to communicate with his friends and family.
