Job advice needed
I’m currently in probation at a backend operations role in a brokerage firm with a pretty questionable reputation locally. The title sounds decent on paper, but the actual work is mostly repetitive operational processing (corporate actions, settlements-related tasks, reconciliations, etc.).
The issue is that my background is actually more technical/data-related, and I originally wanted to move toward data/BA/analytics type roles. I tried discussing internal mobility with my manager, but was basically told that:
- people usually can’t transfer internally during probation
- this role supposedly has “good exit opportunities”
- I should just stay confident and stick with it
But honestly, I’m worried that if I stay too long, I’ll get pigeonholed into operations forever. I don’t really see many transferable technical skills being built here besides learning internal processes and handling operational workflows.
Now I’m considering quitting during probation and trying to pivot earlier into something closer to BA/data/tech, even if it means taking contract or outsourced roles first.
Would it be reckless to leave this early?
Or is it actually smarter to cut losses before getting stuck in an operations trajectory?
Would really appreciate honest advice from people who’ve worked in finance ops or successfully pivoted out of it.
