Niko - this is Nikolai and you are ready for this conversation.
Once, one of Oneshot’s lead developers—Nightmargin—admitted that the main character’s name, Niko, is a reference to Nikola Tesla. Changing just one letter in the word “Nico” changed everything. Today, I’m going to tell you something the developers themselves don’t want to officially acknowledge, in order to keep the game’s community engaged in constant debate about the character’s gender and so on.
Since Niko is a reference to Nikola Tesla, it follows that Niko’s full name is Nikola or Nikolaj, and he is Serbian. I’ll prove this further on.
Niko lives in a village surrounded by wheat fields—there are villages in Serbia where wheat is grown. Let’s move on. Niko loves pancakes with hazelnuts—hazelnuts are also grown in Serbia.
Niko’s mother wears a white headscarf that closely resembles a traditional Serbian women’s headscarf.
I believe these facts, as presented by the developers, are sufficient to conclude that Niko is Nikolai, and that he is Serbian.
