Client hired a new intern and after auditing now terminated contract and requesting a 1k refund

Very annoyed. A contract I've had for a few months is now trying to run a "scorched earth campaign" on me and demanding money back. My original point of contact left the company and she hired this new intern who vetted my hours and said I wasn't working all of the hours I billed them for based on records and proceeded to terminate the contract without warning? Its complete BS and they're expectations were predatory in terms of how much work they expected to be done within an unrealistic amount of time. My question is, how will Upwork address this and what could they really do if I refuse to refund that amount? In good faith, I already refunded them about one week's worth of pay, but yet to hear more of a response. I am curious if other people have gone through similar things.
