Removing dye from Lurex stripes with Rit? (Or other remover)
I have a cotton gauze that has teal/gold lurex stripes. It was bought years ago and looked black online but was brown when I got it. So I dyed it but it didn't fully take and I was left with a deep brown garment. The stripes were of course unaffected bc they are a poly material.
I dyed it again a month or so ago and it was still off black (at this point I wished I had just gone with a dye remover FIRST when I got it but I figured dyeing black from a dark color wouldn't be such an ordeal), possibly bc it's a lot of yardage even though the fabric is thin. Again, the stripes were fine.
I needed it to be black for an event and decided to leave it sitting overnight so I wouldn't have to dye it a FOURTH time but when I rinsed it this morning, the dye had settled on the Lurex!! I used a different dye brand that seems much more 'sticky'. (I'm no longer in the US so Rit is not the main brand) The beautiful bright color shift effect is greatly diminished but since it's just surface tint on smooth plastic, I am wondering if color remover might work? Does anyone have any experience removing tint from mylar/lurex or metallic embroidery?
Obviously extruded plastic cannot have the color removed but I am NOT asking how to remove the color of polyester-- I am asking how to REMOVE surface tint from dying over a manufactured fabric.
Thanks in advance!
