New 986, Water Pump Questions
I bought a 1999 Boxster with 81k today. About 120 miles into my 200 mile return trip I noticed the temps were getting high and the light started blinking so I pulled over and put like 2 gallons of distilled water. I noticed a steady drip from center passenger side of the engine.
It ended up taking about 7 gallons of distilled water to finish the trip. I probably should have gotten a tow but it never actually ran very hot, just edged close to the third tick from the left.
I haven’t jacked it up yet but based on the location I’m guessing water pump. From my review of the service records it’s never been done.
I was planning on doing that and an air/oil separator asap anyway, I’m planning on driving the car on a 1700 mile round trip to the keys in a little over a month assuming it doesn’t scare me too much before then.
Anyway that’s my rambling story, questions are:
- I’m going to do a thermostat
with the water pump,
anything else I should change while I’m in there?
I’ve basically flushed my coolant system completely. Any benefit to switching to the newer Porsche coolant formulation? I saw one for mid 2000s and older and one for newer cars at the parts store
