Heart broken over student leaving the school
First year kindergarten teacher at a title nine school. My first year teaching has been really up and down and while I thought I was ending on a high, I sit in my apartment heart broken before the last day of school. Half way through the year a new student I will call Stu (obviously not his real name) was put into my class. I was given a lot of prep for him, been in 5 different homes at the age of 6 currently lives with grandma with mom in prison and dad in a half way house. Stu when he came in had zero regulation skills or any way to deal with getting frustrated. Had zero idea how to play or talk to kids his age since he has never been in school before or played with others. Not to mention he was being home schooled by a dad who didn’t finish high school so way behind academically even for a kindergarten (didn’t know how spell own name). Through lots of work and head aches with Stu by the end of the year he is able to deal with frustration and not just give up and start rolling around on the ground like he used to. Being able to play appropriately with others and actually have multiple friends. Along with being able to tell me why he’s upset and asking for help vs before he would just cry on the floor and scream he’s a failure. And while he’s still behind academically he has made so much growth, with reading and writing. Today, grandma sent a very long thought full thank you letter for working with him. At the end though she said that dad is getting out of the half way house and will take care of him along with taking out of school to homeschool him. All the work, all the progress we at the school made with this kid, just is going to be thrown away. A kid I fear will just be another police statistic in 12 years. Am I being to negative? I just right now can’t believe it and very upset by the news. I was looking so forward seeing this kid grow through out school man and he’s just leaving back to a shitty situation.
