Going directly against vet’s advice regarding tonight’s dose?
My kitty Hagrid has been diagnosed since February and on 2 units of Glargine (Lantus). My vet didn’t recommend regular testing and had him do a curve once a month with the Freestyle Libre. His last Libre readings were super low—literally in the 60s and 70s when I’ve never seen him drop below 200. Because of that, I didn’t give him insulin last night or this morning. He promptly ripped off the sensor later this morning and after chatting with the vet tech (the vet isn’t in until tomorrow) she advised to keep administering insulin despite these numbers. I insisted on testing him myself and she gave me an Alphatrak 2. I tested him around 6pm and he was 123 and plan to test before dinner at 8pm. She told me that healthy numbers are between 80-150 and that he could get as low as 60 before I shouldn’t administer insulin.
It was the first day on the Libre and I know that the numbers within the first 24 hours may not be accurate, so I’m going to believe his Alphatrak numbers. I’ve done a lot of research and I haven’t seen a single person recommend administering insulin below 200, maybe 150 at the lowest. I don’t feel confident giving him insulin if he’s going to be that low, but I want to believe my vet. I’m always going to err on the side of “higher numbers is safer than lower” in regards to skipping a dose, but I’m curious what yall think about my vet’s advice.
