If you were moving to the Lille area, where would you choose to live and why?

Hi everyone!

I’ll be visiting the Lille area for about four weeks beginning at the end of August. My goal isn’t to check off tourist attractions. I want to experience everyday life and get a genuine feel for the area because I’m considering spending much more time in the region in the future.

I’ve been looking at Airbnbs and hotels, and accommodations are a little more expensive than I had hoped. I’m guessing that’s because of the Braderie de Lille and the time of year, but I’m not sure.

I’m open to staying somewhere outside Lille if there’s an easy train, metro, or bus connection into the city. I’m not renting a car, so good public transportation is important.

When I search Airbnb, I keep seeing places like Roubaix, La Madeleine**,** and other nearby towns, but I don’t know the area well enough to know which ones would be a good fit for my visit. I’d love to hear which nearby communities you’d recommend and which ones you think I should avoid for someone who wants to experience everyday life while still having easy access to Lille.

I’m looking for places that:

  • Are easy to get to from Lille by public transportation.
  • Have their own personality (cafés, parks, markets, restaurants, walkable neighborhoods, etc.).
  • Give me a chance to experience local life rather than just tourism.

If you were moving to the Lille area, where would you choose to live, and why?

I’m also learning French (very much a beginner), so I’m excited to practice while I’m there.

One more question: What do you personally like most about living where you live?

Thanks! I’m really looking forward to learning from all of you.
