First-year engineering PhD with a hands-off PI: How do I find high-value research gaps?
Hey, i am a first year PhD student in engineering. I finished my master's within the same area as well. My PI is pretty hands off. He only cares about our progress. He doesn't assign particular projects also. He gives vague ideas and it's my work to find research gaps and everything. I am not really sure how to do that. Right now, I am just working on an extended project from my mentor's work but I just feel it's boring right now because its the same area and everything.
Sorry for the blabber. My question is how do I find research gaps in ocean of knowledge that's out there? How do I find an interesting project for myself?
