My partner and I are planning a small elopement in the Canadian Rockies, and we’d love to hear from couples who have recently eloped in Banff, Lake Louise, or Moraine Lake.

Is selling specialized laboratory supplies a viable small business?

I’ve been looking into different niche business ideas, and one area that caught my attention is specialized laboratory supplies.

Instead of trying to compete in broad categories like general office or household products, the idea would be to focus on specific products that research labs and educational facilities regularly need.

For example, products such as laboratory-grade bacteriostatic water, sterile supplies, containers, and other research consumables.

I recently came across Hospira BAC Water 30 mL from Elements DNA and it got me thinking about the business side of this niche.

For someone considering starting a business in laboratory supplies:

  • Is there enough demand for a small specialized supplier?
  • Would you focus on individual researchers or B2B/laboratory customers?
  • What would be the biggest challenge: finding reliable suppliers, regulations, shipping, or customer acquisition?
  • Would specializing in a narrow category be better than trying to sell everything?
