2.5 weeks post-op from double Osteotomy
I am 26 and just got my right foot fixed, I have congenital bunions, my joint was basically diagonal. I’m also hyper-mobile so that also played a role in how mine were corrected. I ended up getting a full transverse osteotomy on my first metatarsal and a partial transverse osteotomy on my big toe.
Biggest things I experienced
- After waking up from surgery I was in a lot of pain… like essentially screaming and sobbing uncontrollably, not everyone experiences this but your team should be well prepared to handle the situation if it does happen. Mine was ready with a nerve block after getting me pain meds and a med to calm me down.
- The nerve pain is something I knew was going to happen but it was way worse than I ever imagined. Once again, my team got me taken care of. Gabapentin was a lifesaver but it has its drawbacks too.
- Pressure sores… I did everything right to avoid them and still ended up with them. I think my wrap was too tight initially and being told I shouldn’t unwrap it (I’m autistic so I’m very much a stickler for “rules”) what they should have told me is to avoid unwrapping unless absolutely necessary, such as if it was causing me pain. Thankfully urgent care got me cleaned up, re-wrapped, and some antibiotics because one of the sores was looking a little weird (yellow drainage and skin degradation). Make sure to keep your original team in the loop too :)
If you have any other questions let me know and I can weigh in on my experience.
