Moving to NJ: Which Districts Have Strong Special Education, Avoid Outsourcing, and Offer Excellent High Schools?
My family is considering a move to New Jersey, and I’m hoping to get advice from parents who have experience with local school districts—especially regarding special education services.
My biggest priority is my younger son, who has autism and an intellectual disability. He currently attends his neighborhood public school, and I want him to remain in a regular district school setting whenever appropriate. I am specifically looking for districts that:
• Have strong IEP support and communication
• Prioritize inclusion in mainstream classrooms when appropriate
• Do not routinely outsource students to separate schools or programs unless absolutely necessary
• Are well-organized, responsive, and adequately funded for special education services
• Have a reputation for working collaboratively with families
At the same time, I also have an older child who will be entering high school, so strong academics are extremely important. Ideally, I’m looking for:
• Highly rated high schools (8/10+ preferred)
• College-prep academic environment
• Structured, disciplined learning culture
Other priorities include:
• Safe, family-friendly suburbs with a clean and stable feel
• Easy access to shopping, groceries, medical care, and everyday conveniences
• Strong recreation programs, sports, camps, and community centers for kids
• Rental options (townhome preferred, apartment if necessary)
• Occasional access to Manhattan is a bonus but not a major factor
Based on these priorities, which New Jersey towns or school districts would you recommend I research? I’d especially appreciate hearing from parents of children with special needs who have firsthand experience with inclusion and district support.
