Can I guilt you into doing my memory study?
Hi everybody,
I'm working on my PhD. The focus is looking at if the selective attention of military training makes us more or less resistant to misinformation exposure after an observed event. The Recruitment Letter has all the specifics as well as the link to the study. I'll also copy and paste what is in it below in case you need something to help you sleep.
The guilting part is I was one of the OIF guys doing medical and ordnance...do you feel obligated yet? Of course not, but it would be a big help if you and anyone else you know that might qualify does my little experiment and then maybe I can develop something a little more as to how I had originally planned the study for more refined results.
This isn't the regular "like me" "not like me" surveys you see. It's a series of cognitive tests with a bunch of timer junk I had to put in so that you are not using working memory when tested. It's boring...I had to do it a bunch of times to debug the setup. Also, the military specific demographics questions all figure into the math making those annoying for a reason. So far, the washout rate is I had 8 people start and only 1 has finished at the time of writing. I have to have 90 completed to run the statistics.
As a last bit of information, it's all anonymous. That's for your protection but if you want to know how you did when you have completed it...I have no idea. Best I can offer is the answers in an email and you can read over what's what. I'll also answer any questions if you have them in case anyone is just curious.
The recruitment letter reads:
Hello. I am a doctoral learner under the direction of Professor Susan K. Steele-Moses in the
College of Doctoral Studies at Grand Canyon University. My name is Joshua Walter Barry. I am
conducting a research study to learn how time in the military affects memory of training events. I
am also studying whether job type makes a difference, including combat arms and support roles.
INCLUSION – I am recruiting individuals that meet these criteria:
• Are 18 years old or older.
• Are currently serving or have served in the U.S. Army or U.S. Marine Corps
• Live in the United States, a U.S. territory, or are serving overseas.
• Can read and speak English.
• Can provide your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) code.
• And you are willing to answer questions related to age, gender, race, ethnicity, rank,
branch, MOS, time in service, and educational level.
EXCLUSION – You cannot be in this study if:
• Are currently in the Delayed Entry Program and are not yet 18.
• Cannot remember or provide your MOS code.
ACTIVITIES for this research project will include:
• Answer questions about your background (about 5 minutes)
• Look at training images.
• Answer brief questions.
• Read short passages.
• Answer memory questions.
• This will take about 20 to 30 minutes total.
• You will do everything online using Gorilla.sc on a computer, laptop, or tablet.
Your participation in this study is voluntary. There is no compensation for participation.
All data in this study will be protected by not collecting personal information. Your responses
will be anonymous and stored on secure systems. Responses are anonymous and stored on
