Third Time’s the Charm

I finished another one. This time around I have a Maple bottom with a dyed White Ash lid, and a rather exceptional Petoskey Stone inlaid in the knob.

In the past year I’ve spent countless hours relearning what I’ve forgotten over a 5 year hiatus from turning. I’m glad to finally say that from a technical standpoint I feel like I’m back to where I should be.

It’s time for me to move forward with embellishments. I’ve been adding stones to some of my turnings, and I’m starting to dabble with alcohol inks, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. I feel like the next step is to buy a wood burner and some carving bits for my rotary tool.

Oops, I did it again!?!

Figured I’d give it another go at the wood and stone combo. This one is an unknown burl base with a walnut lid, and a rather impressive Lake Superior Agate inlaid into the knob. This one measures in at 3.5” tall with a 4.5” diameter. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ll be making quite a few more of these.

I decided recently to combine my two hobbies of woodturning and lapidary, and to say the least I’m pretty happy with the outcome so far.

The base is spalted Maple, the lid is Black Walnut and the stone is an epidote/quartz copper conglomerate. Everything was sourced locally from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
