Poetry
When I taught college, students would sometimes ask about the best ways to build their vocabulary. I always told them to read articles in journals from their chosen field to build their professional vocabulary and to read poetry to improve their overall vocabulary. Novels are also a great choice, but students rarely have time to read whole novels outside of their regular assignments. Anyone can find a spare 10-15 minutes to read a poem.
Regardless of what you read, have a pen or pencil handy for your thoughts on what you are reading and to write down new vocabulary.
