What's our best option for high amount of unsecured debt?
I currently owe about $75,000 in unsecured debt. This includes credit cards and a loan. All of this came from being irresponsible with money when I was younger and unforeseen emergencies that came with becoming a first time home owner (and not having emergency funds to fix things that break). I'm at a point where the minimum payments are more than I can handle along with paying my car bill and house bills and utilities. My husband is in a similar boat as me with a lot of his credit card debt being from medical bills. We are both leasing cars and we own our home. I suggested filing for bankruptcy but he doesn't want to do that. Our car leases are up in about a year and he's worried we might be screwed by the bankruptcy and not be able to get cars when the lease is up. He's also worried about if we potentially want to move that we won't be able to get a mortgage any time soon after the bankruptcy. My issue is that both our credit scores are already crap, so I'm wondering what the difference between filing bankruptcy and having a crappy score is because it's going to be hard to get any sort of loan with a score in the 500s. I've also heard of debt management plans and debt settlement plans as well. We really need a way to pay back everything with a low monthly payment because right now I have no money left over to buy groceries, gas or really anything else after paying the bills. What's our best option here? I am 100% fine with my cards being closed and never touching a credit card again after getting through this. They are nothing but trouble for people like me and my husband. We owe over $100,000 unsecured debt between us. If anyone has had similar experiences and can share what they did to get out of debt, please let me know. We are desperate to get out and be more responsible going forward. Thanks!
Edit: Also, forgot to add that my husband already has 2 jobs and is unfortunately losing his full time job in a couple of months (his teaching position is being eliminated at his school). I have a full time job but recently had a pay cut due to budget cuts. I make a little extra money where I can selling things I don't use anymore. We are deep in the hole and want out and yes, we will live below our means when this is settled. We just can't right now because we have to keep using debt to pay for basic necessities 🙃
