The wild west and gold rush

Julian Fellowes once said season 3 was to make clear that all the gilded life of New Yorkers and other east coast cities was resting on the shoulders of the Wild West industry.

That made me remember about all the dollar princesses who “saved” British nobility in real life, like Gladys (or DA Cora).

So now I’m wondering if British nobility ever thought their castles were saved by miners and people shooting each other in the middle of street (I’m reminding back to the future 3, now).

I don’t know, maybe I’m just impatient about season 4 and I have much free time to wonder.

Humor me; and share your thoughts. Thanks :)

Writing a column about Sir Tapsell

In my umpteenth rewatch I’m getting to the horrible discussion between Dr Clarkson and Sir Tapsell about the ankles, if you what I mean.

Recently, Edith has been published by The Times and offered a contract by The Lady.

Do you think at any point she should have (or actually did) written a column talking about medical negligence to women? As a way to publicly expose him like we maybe would do in social media “don’t go to this doctor”, zero stars or something.

Or maybe a more intimate retrospective storytelling as in “let me share our sister story, as a homage to her character... it happened ten years ago and she definitely would be a champion for all women, who deserve better…and now I have a position to giver her a voice…”

I know Lady Edith doesn’t have many supporters in her personal life in this sub, but I think, professionally she is great, hard worker and good thinker.

What do you think? Did she? Should she have?

Thanks for your thoughts :)

Great voices wasted

In my opinion, Dan Stevens and Michelle Dockery have great voices. The scene when Matthew joins her to sing should be a longer scene, the whole song, let the hearts and fireworks float and blow in the air… instead of just few verses and a chorus with everybody singing along ruining the love confection.

I mean, if JF kept whole songs in Christmas specials Why don’t keep it in this super important moment?

Any thoughts?

Mary’s age for settling

I’m doing an umpteenth rewatch (episode 1 currently) and I was wondering if Mary was already 21 when the titanic sank Why wasn’t she already married to Patrick? And maybe with a baby or two? If girls started at 18 (the seasons) and parents already have planned to marry her to Patrick, Why to wait?

Later, Violet shares her concerns about Mary closing to 25 and still single and Rosamund says something about Mary being more a season survivor with no prospects.

I think I’m looking for a Watsonian reason. Because Doylist is to have a conflict to solve and bring Matthew to the storytelling.

Thanks :)

Edit: thanks for all the answers. It has been great to learn some things and to ponder “what if” scenarios :)

Spoiler ahead for first time watchers

.

I’m doing a rewatch after some years. I’m currently in season 4, the episode when Roger is working on a memoir book and Joan thinks she is pregnant. Roger said something sort of “the best memories are about you”

If so, Why he didn’t marry Joan after he divorced Mona? Why he married Jane of all girls? Am I missing something?

Thanks for your insights :)

EDIT: I’ve been reading and commenting your answers, thanks :) I just to clarify something. My question is about Roger. Some of you have nicely answered Joan wouldn’t marry him. And maybe is the why I asked. My question is why Roger didn’t go after Joan if he is like lapdog always returning to her. Anyway, thanks for the ride. It’s been pretty fun to read all of you :)
