Hi everyone,
I’m planning a 3-week backpacking trip to Sri Lanka this August, but I’m a bit concerned about the current stability given the events of the last few months.
I’m aware that Sri Lanka is still recovering from Cyclone Ditwah (Nov 2025), but now with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East affecting global energy prices, I’m seeing reports of new fuel rationing and inflation spikes in Colombo.
For those currently on the ground or living there, could you help with a few questions?
- Fuel & Transport: I’ve read that the QR-based fuel rationing is back since March/April 2026. How is this affecting tourist transport? Are public buses running regularly, or are there major cancellations? Is it still easy to find Tuk-Tuks, and have the prices doubled?
- The Train Route (Kandy to Ella): Latest reports suggest the Kandy–Nanu Oya section is still closed or under heavy repair due to the cyclone's landslides. Can anyone confirm if the "scenic route" is at least partially open, or should I plan for 100% bus travel in the Hill Country?
- East Coast Vibe: I'm planning to head to Arugam Bay and Trincomalee to stay in the dry zone. Has the local infrastructure there (guesthouses, restaurants) recovered from the cyclone damage? Is the "party/surfer vibe" still alive despite the economic pressure?
- Power Cuts: With the fuel shortages and the recent heatwave impacting hydro-power, are scheduled power cuts back? Should I prioritize accommodation with generators?
I really want to support the local tourism industry, but I want to be realistic about the "adventure vs. struggle" balance.
Any recent experiences would be gold!
