I’m planning a setup for targeting large catfish like piraíba and I want to build it around a baitcasting system rather than spinning.

I’m trying to figure out what type of rod and reel setup is actually appropriate for this kind of fishing. I know piraíba can get extremely large and powerful, so I don’t want to underpower the gear.

From what I understand so far, I should be looking for something like a heavy or extra-heavy catfish casting rod with a strong backbone, but I’m not sure about the exact specs (line rating, casting weight, rod length, etc.).

I also want to avoid spinning reels completely and stick to a baitcasting/multiplying reel setup, preferably something that can handle big river fish and long, strong runs.

So my questions are:

What rod specifications are realistically needed for piraíba?
Is a heavy catfish casting rod enough, or do I need offshore-style gear?
What type/size of baitcasting reel would match this kind of rod?
Any recommended setups that are proven for giant Amazon catfish?

I’d appreciate any experienced input, especially from people who have actually targeted large South American catfish or similar big river species.
