Is July or August better?

Is a July 1st or August 1st move in better (or is there no difference) for apartment availability?

Originally from nyc and moving back after a few years since job layoffs. I’ll be looking to sublet but I know the finding an apt is hard in the summer. I lived with my parents before moving out of nyc so I’m not too familiar with the rental market there unfortunately. Any tips appreciated, thank you.

Apartment availability

Hello all, I’m originally from nyc and moved away a few years ago for a job that unfortunately had layoffs. Now I’m trying to move back and it seems to apartment market is much more difficult than I ever expected (before leaving nyc I lived with my parents who have now passed). I know based on the this sub that moving in the summer is already bananas but I don’t have a choice except which month I come. Do you think it would be better to move for a July 1st move in date or August 1st (or no difference?). I’ll be looking for a sublet since I don’t have a job lined up yet but I do have savings and a bit of severance. Thank you in advance.

TL/DR: would there be more apartments available for a July 1st move in or August 1st?

additionally: the reason I’m coming back is also so I can be near my extended family again (although none of them have space for someone else) plus my lease where I’m currently at is ending.
