I built a listing tool for resellers, found out it worked too well, and spent the last month fixing that problem. Here's the full story.

A few weeks ago I posted about Listaza here: an AI tool that turns a photo into a ready-to-post marketplace listing for eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Etsy, Poshmark, and Mercari.

The feedback was good. People tried it. And then almost nobody came back.

I spent some time figuring out why.

The answer was kind of funny in hindsight. When you sign up, you get a full week of premium access... no credit card, no friction. Everything unlocked. And the app does exactly what it says it does. You take a photo, AI writes a complete listing, you copy it and post it. Done in under a minute.

The problem was that "done in under a minute" meant people got everything they needed in their first session and had no reason to return. And when the free trial ended, the only real difference between free and paid was access to more marketplaces. Not compelling enough. Not a "wow" difference.

So I went back to the drawing board.

The first thing I tried to build was AI background removal. Clean white backgrounds make listings look more professional and sell faster, any reseller knows this. I tried remove.bg API first. The results looked like someone had run the image through a fax machine. I scrapped it. Then I tried to set up Google's Nano Banana 2 model. Too complicated to get working the way I needed. After about two months of on-and-off work, I landed on OpenAI's Image 2 model and finally got it right. Background removal that actually looks good and doesn't destroy the subject.

That shipped as version 1.28.

Then I looked at the listing quality gap between free and paid. Before, the AI was generating roughly the same quality of listing regardless of tier. I rebuilt the generation logic so premium listings are substantially better, they factor in marketplace-specific best practices, formatting conventions, and structural differences between how eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, and Mercari each expect listings to be written. Free tier still generates solid listings for eBay and Facebook Marketplace. Premium goes deeper on every platform.

Then I rebuilt the homepage because none of that mattered if new visitors couldn't tell what the product actually did.

All of that together became v2.0.

If you tried it before and moved on, it's worth another look. The core workflow is the same: photo in, listing out, under a minute (unless you are removing the background...so then its under 3 minutes, lol) but the premium tier is genuinely different now, and the free tier is still free.

Happy to answer any questions about what I built or how I made the background removal work if anyone's curious. I'd hate for anyone to go through what I went through.
