Posting on behalf of my partner.
She’s an RN working in General Medical at a public hospital in Victoria and is keen to move into Emergency Nursing.
Background:
- Bachelor of Nursing from overseas
- Several years of nursing experience in Australia
- 1 year of prior ED experience overseas
What she’s tried:
- Applied for the hospital’s Transition to Specialty Practice program more than once, but hasn’t had any success so far
- Looked into a Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nursing, but the usual pathways seem to assume you’re already working in ED
It feels a bit like a catch-22: difficult to get into ED without the qualification, but difficult to access the qualification without ED experience.
Looking for advice on:
- The best way to transition from Gen Med into ED
- Whether internal applications, shadowing, or networking with ED NUM/CNE is the best approach
- Whether people have had success moving into ED without a Grad Cert first
- Any suggestions for making a strong ED application from a ward background
Would love to hear from anyone who’s made this move in Victoria.
