Principal Scientist/ Study Director role

Hello Everyone, I just wanted to hear from those who have worked as a Principal Scientist/ Study Director role in a pharma company before (eg Merck etc). What is your experience like and did you enjoy what you do? For context I am an academic research scientist (5 years postdoc experience) in a research institute in the US. I enjoy the research process but staying in academia beyond being a research scientist role (becoming a PI) might be challenging given the funding status now. But I also know that industry jobs are highly competitive as well. I just wanted to know the experience of those who have been in that specific role in industry. Thanks in advance for sharing!
