What I look for when buying gold jewelry that won't fade — a checklist that actually works

After buying a lot of jewelry that didn't last, I got specific

about what to look for. Sharing in case it helps anyone else.

The checklist:

✓ 18K gold plating — not "gold tone," not unlisted karat

✓ Nickel-free base metal (brass or stainless steel named

explicitly — not just "hypoallergenic," which means nothing

legally in the US)

✓ Reviews mentioning how pieces hold up after 6+ months of

daily wear — not just "beautiful when it arrived."

✓ 30-day return policy minimum — brands confident in their

quality offer this

Everything else is marketing. The brands that are transparent

about all four of these are worth buying from. The vague ones are cutting corners somewhere.

Happy to share more if anyone has specific questions about

what to look for.

How I finally stopped buying jewelry that turns green — what I learned after years of trial and error

Used to spend money on jewelry constantly because everything

faded or irritated my skin within weeks. Finally figured out

what was actually going wrong.

The green skin thing isn't caused by the gold — it's copper in

the base metal reacting with your skin's acidity. Happens when

the plating wears through and exposes whatever is underneath.

What actually made a difference for me:

Look for 18K gold plating specifically, not just "gold tone."

or "gold colored." And the base metal matters as much as the

plating — brass or stainless steel, explicitly nickel-free.

Brands that don't tell you what the base metal is are usually

hiding something.

Also, put jewelry on last, after skincare and perfume. This

Alone extended the life of my pieces significantly.

Been wearing the same pieces daily for over a year now with

zero issues. Game changer after years of frustration.

Has anyone else figured this out the hard way?
