Articleship experience with Toxic boomer director

I am a 23 y/o article (yes I have had a gap year and attempts in intermediate) working at a boutique firm in a niche field. Due to structural changes in the team I am directly working with the director as there is no manager and a single associate who basically joined after me with no prior experience.

I was stuck in a certain area and had spent 8-9hrs with no real outcome and I was trying to figure out the same on my own and also pointed out discrepancies from the files sent from client while my director was pressuring me to complete it with no more time spent on it as it was not efficient as we were not being paid for it. Getting on calls he bashed me about how much time I have spent on this and you have gotten an opportunity to work with a director and shit and also made me feel like I am not doing good.

While it was my first time doing such work and this was earlier being handled by my manager and they also left due to the toxicity of this director.

At some times I felt they were over reacting but now having the direct experience of this I feel like he is micromanaging and being unfair. I feel like calling this guy off the next time he talks like that but on the other hand I feel this is a part of the experience.

Please advice how should I take this.
