Hi fellow tutors. So I just got matched with a new student (matric/grade 12 first additional language - Afrikaans) who I will be tutoring online. I have access to records of any previous sessions done with a student with other tutors, so I had a look to help me prepare.

I saw that the previous tutor mentioned on several occasions that the student had cancelled sessions at the last minute. It makes me a bit nervous because I have always communicated with my students' parents and never the student directly, which this students' parent asked me to do.

Our first session is next week, and I'm unsure about whether to raise it in our first meeting or give thek the benefit of the wait for a cancellation with me. Does anyone have any tips on how I can approach this or even more general guidance about managing students with q tendancy to cancel last minute? Thanks!

Like, if you heard this on the radio, it wouldn't make you raise an eyebrow. Excluding those that have actually gone mainstream or kind of mainstream (like Let it Go) or those using songs from the mainstream (like anything in Mama Mia). Share your favourites!

I've been thinking about and trying to compile a list of musical numbers where the bad guys hatch their evil plan, or one character tries to convince another character of a plan they are relunctant towards. I know many musicals feature a villian song, but I'm focusing specifically on the hatching or explaining their plan. This is what I've got so far. What songs would you add?

- Easy street (Annie)

- A little priest (Sweenie Todd)

- We can do it (The producers)

- Be prepared (The lion king)

Fellow tutors, I am really struggling to get through to one of my students. He is 13 year old and in grade 7 (South Africa). I have seen for about 6 sessions (about 9 hours total over the last two months) for Afrikaans as a first additional language subject.

I have tried incorporating his interests (mainly video games) by using relevant comprehension passages, gamifying activities, and giving him XPs for the progress he makes.

We have built a good rapport, he seems to like me, we make lots of jokes and stuff, he opens up to me quite a bit, and he engages pretty well in our sessions. But, based on what I have seen and on the conversations I've had with his parents, he still seems to dread the subject.

Does anyone have any tips for fostering a more positive attitude towards learning a second language? Any advice would be appreciated🙏
