Suggestions for road trip with 7, 10 and 13 year old voracious readers with different tastes
17 hour car ride coming up with 7, 10, and 12 year old boys who listen to different audiobooks almost every night and read a lot during the day. I may suggest everyone read their own stuff but I have a (perhaps foolish) dream of all getting into one book together. The only style/series they’ve ever agreed on is anything by Rick Riorden but we’ve churned through all of his series.
7 year old loves more sci-fi: wild robot, zero g, and the Martian is actually his favorite audio book (I know, I know. So, no language isn’t going to be a problem, nor is content level)
10 year old loves the wings of fire series and any survival style like hatchet or my side of the mountain but prefers reading books to audio books
13 year old is obsessed with anything manga but will do audiobooks heavily into fantasy like lord of the rings, artimis fowl, Percy Jackson.
I’ve been previewing books for them and coming up short. They vetoed redwall and they all vehemently dislike Harry Potter (unclear why, but we’ve tried both books and movies). We’ve done fablehaven, narnia, and some Sanderson with “meh” reception. I think those are missing the snarky style of Rick Riordan, which is what they want most.
Any other ideas? In a perfect world it would also entertain mom and dad, but at this point anything they could agree on would be a win. Thanks for any suggestions!
