Frustrated teacher

I’m a High School teacher and preparing to wrap things up in my first year teaching in the public school. I gave the students an easy 100 point assignment and if they did it they would receive a massive amount of extra credit. Of my 150 students maybe 12 did it. This would bring up their grades for many of them. I went on a rant explaining how life doesn’t offer these kind of second chances. I even gave them 5 days to do it. I’m just venting and can definitely say many have harsh lessons coming their way after high school unfortunately. Thank you to anyone who read my rant have a great summer.

Bitterness

In your opinion what is the biggest thing or reason why teachers become bitter in this profession? I’m obviously speaking in general here but almost every teacher I know with the exception of that 20% is bitter at the end of their career and just want to retire or become a shell of their younger self. I had a teacher in my HS who would drink beer during class and was just waiting for retirement. We did nothing the whole year and he would ask us what grade we wanted. My colleagues are frequently the same. I’m just looking for anyone’s perspective not judging here.

End of year patience

School finally ends next week THANK GOD. Does anyone else feel like their patience is on fumes? I try not to ever let the kids feel like I'm being impatient with them but man I can't for this year to be over with. Teachers, we are ALMOST DONE.

When did teaching become a glorified baby sitting job?

As a kid of the 90s I don’t know if those teachers felt that way but I know many teachers feel that way now. In your opinion what year did it start?

It's like I'm in a rock and a hard place here at my school . The principal (who I like and respect a lot as a person) does a terrible job of implementing discipline and the kids come late and walk the halls even after the bell rings. It causes serious issues in the classes and disrupts the flow of classes with students coming in late. On the flip side there is still a lot about being a teacher that I need to improve but since the school sucks so much that bad leadership is helping me because if I was at a better school I'm sure they would be on me more about things I need to improve. So in one way I'm grateful because it gives me time to keep improving and learning on the other hand the lack of leadership causes me more heartache because the Kids know they can get away with anything outside of something like having a gun. All I'm trying to do is get better at my job and decide if this is worth doing long term but I just wanted to share with you my daily battle here and see if anyone find themselves in the same situation.

21 school days to go and I feel like I’m getting grounded Down. Any tips to make it to the end of the school year? It feels like everyday is suffering and I just want it to end. This is my first year as a public school teacher.
