Fun fact: You can use your foreign SIM, on roaming, to use an old mobile in a country with 2G/3G networks.
For example: I am in Qatar, staying here for a while. I got bored last week and put my Australian SIM into this old Samsung SGH-A412 Telstra phone (unlocked to any network though), and to my surprise it worked and registered on EDGE network
If you live in a country without a legacy network, but will be transiting or going to a country with legacy networks, i recommend you do this trick
