Inspired by the old myth of the nymph Loreley, who is sometimes seen sitting on a rocky promontory still bearing her name at a sharp bend of the river Rhine. Some say she is singing, others say she is brushing her golden hair, and luring unwary river boatsmen to crash on the rocks and drown.

(That narrow bend in the river is still the most dangerous part of the Rhine today because of its unpredictable currents, shifting sandbanks, and hidden rocks under the water.)
