I finally heard the car that sounds like a drive-by shooting

Just now for the first time I heard this car that people have been posting about that sounds like it's shooting a gun or fireworks as it goes through the neighborhood. And all that it is is a car that is either poorly tuned or intentionally tuned to make it repeatedly backfire as it decelerates.

They rev it up and accelerate without shifting to a higher gear, let off the gas and it backfires with most of the cylinders. I just heard them taking a tour through Soma doing this over and over again, it's definitely intentional.

Kind of a strange way to seek attention, I just wonder if it's sacrificing the motor to achieve it.

Remove the ability to downvote people's comments below 1

Preamble:

We already do this with OPs, so why not also with comments?

Reddit has long passed the point where downvoting is a metric of useful information because people regularly abuse the feature to register their disapproval of grammar, spelling, punctuation, revenge, or even they just don't like the choice of words used. It's being used not as it was originally intended to register one disagrees with the content posted, rather now as a common means to punish people. And when people start downvoting, others pile on just because other people are downvoting them too, it's nearly an automatic reaction that, again, is not useful. So people get downvoted into oblivion but often there's no clear indication why so there's no benefit, it doesn't communicate anything useful. And for a lot of people this is very discouraging, and to a limited few that truly place personal value on these votes it can be devastating.

-----

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying downvoting isn't useful or that it should be eliminated altogether. But allowing people's comments to get downvoted into the negative by dozens or hundreds is counterproductive, can be hurtful, and for a select few it can be devastating to the point of self-harm, or at the very least deleting their comment(s). Which removes context and pretty much destroys the conversation, wastes everyone's time and is destructive to communities and idea generation. Knowing this will happen effects everyone and how much they choose to participate, how much time they invest in their responses. Why even waste your time, right?

Other communities, like Youtube, have entirely nerfed the downvote or in some areas, like reels, eliminated it entirely. But I'm not convinced eliminating it entirely is useful either.

So what if, instead, the reddit system is set up similar to OP voting, where it goes no lower than 1. Because presumably you've at least upvoted your own post. Just like Youtube, the system will still register your downvote and every time you come across that comment your downvote is still visible to you it just can't bring the vote for any comment lower than 1. People's comments resting at 1 easily communicates the group isn't accepting of whatever they've posted, and that should be quite sufficient. We don't need to punish people further.

The one thing this will accomplish is to help remove a lot of the aggression, unnecessary bickering, and otherwise desperate interactions. It will temper conversations so not quite so much is at stake and people will be more inclined toward interacting rather than reacting and revenge seeking. This will also help to calm the waters for Moderators and Admins and make their jobs a little less miserable.

The whole place would a little less angry, and I'm sure we can all agree we could use a little bit more of that.

The 6th Street your mama warned you about

📷 Charles Mader

All joking aside, it's been some time since I walked around on 6th after 1am so I walked around and hung out for a bit to see what's going on in Soma.

Needless to say I wasn't at all surprised to see at least 100+ people hanging around Monarch, at the corner of Mission, all having a great time and dressed to kill. Aside from the club, for this time of night the street was bustling with activity. People just doing their thing completely unbothered by the sometimes not so visually appealing things one should expect to see in a neighborhood of the formerly homeless and the currently unhoused--they get funneled into the area, of course.

The shear number and wide variety of people out and about at this hour was wild, including a lot of not only single white females but also quite a few single white trans women. Then again, this is the first city district in the world designated as a Trans district, so there's that.

The number of Waymos was a bit much, but it is an artery. In fact, I overheard someone describing a recent encounter with cops storming out of a Waymo as an undercover vehicle to arrest someone. Smart tactic, really.

I had hoped to link to a 15 minute video someone had taken last week focused on 6th & Mission from their 5th floor window illustrating a serene yet busy neighborhood, but sadly they deleted it. Their intent was to show what a joke it is with all the scaremongering of the area.

All that said, does this neighborhood fit the description of a war zone no-man's land?

No, nowhere even close.

Stop deleted posts from listing in Notifications because people use it as a DM system for nasty messages

People have learned that they can send nasty messages to others without consequences by replying to a comment and immediately deleting it. And this isn't just for personal insults, it can be used for anything from death threats to telling people to kill themselves. Even if consequences do come, or the sub's system auto-deletes it, the message still persists in Notifications.

Sure, you can easily delete it if you don't want to look at it, but I say that it does a lot of damage to the community to allow such a thing. The whole system is setup to provide consequences for anti-social and community disrupting behavior, except for some reason this is allowed?

Please change the system so that deleted comments immediately disappear from personal Notifications.

Thank you!

The Rose (1979) - A Forgotten Title that Deserves Some love

I've poked around the sub and found nothing. I've searched through where to stream it; results say they have it, all come up not available. Hell, you can't even find a decent trailer of the movie so I've included this one just so, if you haven't seen it before, it doesn't come off as a big bummer before it's even given a chance.

Why is it that this movie gets so little love?

If you have any love for classic rock and/or you're a fan of Janis Joplin which, despite the studios' protestations, is roughly her biography, this film is most excellent. The production is beautiful, especially when you consider that much of it is documenting the production of a live music tour Bette Midler performed strictly for this film. It has a beautifully well lit film quality to it you rarely see even in documentary films about big named musical properties. It has that dreamy late 60s, early 70s vibe.

The question if this is even an accurate portrayal of Janis' life isn't relevant from where I sit--and I'm a huge fan. From the very first time I saw this film I fell in love with it, and I'm not even a particularly big fan of Midler's. But dear lort the performance she gives in this film, both on stage and for the role, is as powerful as it is tragic, and I just can't get enough of it. And, btw, unbelievably this was her first starring role. I wish other actors would give even half of what she threw on stage.

Have you seen it? What are you thoughts on this forgotten gem?

If anyone finds places on line to stream this, please post it!!
