Getting there from US-- stopovers, ideas?

I'm looking into extended travel of SE Asia. I live in the middle of the US and I think it probably makes the most sense to fly into BKK. One thing I really need to figure out is how to reduce the pain of getting there.

Finances dictate economy seating. I'm traveling alone. From my home airport, I have to travel 28 straight hours. There will be one foreign exchange before arriving to BKK. (Could be all sorts of locations based on flight research, Tokyo, Manila, Hong Kong, who knows atp.) I also know I will be sleepless this whole period.

I don't want to be sleepless for that long and then deal with a foreign exchange all before reaching Bangkok and needing to travel and check-in to my first accommodation. I think when I get to Asia after the 10+hour long-haul I would like a 24 hour layover to book a hotel and get sleep.

I know there is such a thing is a stopover but how do I figure that out? I think you can only book those within airlines and this fare will require multiple airlines. I don't think I have enough experience to know how to accomplish this. Any help is appreciated.

Also, as cool as it would be to do something like book a ticket to Tokyo, hang out for a few days, and then book a ticket to Bangkok, I don't want to do it that way.

I need to get rid of some pigmentation from surgical scars as quickly as possible. The scars are already about 8 weeks old and have faded a lot, but I want to do everything I can to speed up the process. I'm applying my tret. Any other recommendations?

Where to begin?

I've recently become unemployed and I've always wanted to do an extended trip to SE Asia so I'm contemplating 3 months from September 1 through end of December, or something like that. I'm looking for input on several things, for those willing.

  1. Should I extensively visiting Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and maybe Laos with 3 mos., or should I also try to hit major Indonesian destinations such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bali?

  2. What are good itineraries for this amount of time?

  3. Should I purchase a one-way ticket or book round-trip travel? Any other tips on flights from US?

  4. Does anyone have suggestions for a 42F solo traveler? I'm concerned about spending too much time alone and would like to maximize stays, routes, and activities where I would be interacting with other people.

DO NOT BUY FROM COLORADOPEN.COM

I just had the most unbelievable customer service experience in my entire life with this place. I called because my boss purchased a pen for me as a gift and the pen sucked, it can't write a single word without skipping. The woman I spoke to, Cheryl, was incredulous at me from the very beginning of the call. She asked for my name and then used it probably 15-20 times on a call that lasted 3 minutes. She screamed at me that she was offended by my complaint about the pen. After she used my name repeatedly I asked for hers. She gave me her first name. Then she continued to berate me, again repeatedly using my name. I then asked for her last name and she said, "That's none of your business and this conversation is over."

I have never had someone be this rude to me in my entire life I don't think. Crazy. This woman needs professional help.
