Satirical books like “My Year of Rest and Relaxation”?
Hi! I think Ottessa Moshfegh’s “My Year of Rest and Relaxation” is often interpreted differently and some people read it purely as a book about depression but I see it as partly a critique of the main character’s apathy and privilege as well (but with room to sympathize). I wanted to clarify my perspective on it because I don’t really want a book that’s about depression. TBH I think the book is way more interesting as a satire/critique and I’m looking for books that operate that way.
The only other book I can think of that’s satirical and that I have read is “American Psycho.”
Asking because I want to write longform, satirical and possibly comedic writing and would love to sharpen that by reading other people’s work! Ideally more contemporary examples published after 1950s.
Could be purely fiction or nonfiction!
