Totally new to installing Ubuntu and I haven't been able to find a solution. Would appreciate help.

I have an old Dell Latitude 5400 and I'm trying to install Ubuntu on it, but I've hit a roadblock. I looked through the FAQs available on here, however there doesn't seem to be a solution. So the laptop runs on an intel Core i5-8365U proccesor with an integrated GPU and 16GB of DDR4 RAM. I downloaded Ubuntu onto a USB drive a few months ago (don't remember the version, I'm a little hesitant since I don't want to reformat the drive) and tried following instructions I found online to install the OS.

It fails every time. Everytime I choose Try or Install Ubuntu or Ubuntu (safe graphics), I get an endless black screen. Secure Boot is disabled. I've tried the nomodeset method. All I get a black screen with a line that says Booting a Command List. Yeah, I'm pretty stuck at the moment. I did see in the wiki that Xubuntu is better for older laptops. Would that be a solution? Any help would be appreciated.
