I extracted the animation from the original episode (it's pearl's room, from steven universe) and made sure the loop was perfect frame by frame (the waterfall and pool loops have different frame lengths, so that was fun). Then I removed the characters from the scene, adjusted the colors and shadows, and started fighting cinnamon to make mpv work properly as a wallpaper.

Getting the icons to render above the video was a pain, but I managed to solve it thanks to a thread on hidamari's github (I can explain the workaround if anyone's interested). I even made a little button to pause the animation whenever I need to focus.

Making everything transparent wasn't too hard, but the menu sidebar was incredibly stubborn.

Anyway... voilà!
