Older (?) CPU with a RTX Quadro 3000M. Would my friend see a benefit from it?
Hello everyone,
I got a question that I am struggling to research and answer on my own. My friend wants to buy a laptop that in theory will be primary used for his academic work, though I think that from time to time he would also use it for games and stuff.
He is considering getting a used HP Zbook Fury G7 with an i7-10850h, a RTX Quadro 3000M (6GB) and 16GB of DDR4 RAM. What struck me immediately is that this CPU is quite old, and I think nowadays something more recent such as i5-13420H is more performant.
What I have the most problems with is judging the performance of the GPU. I know that Quadros are "workstation" cards, but I don't know whether this model in particular will be of a real benefit to him.
His academic / hobbyist usage is mostly related to 3D modelling, and from talking to him these are the things he usually does (forgive my vagueness but I don't really know much about this stuff):
\- 3D modelling: Simple solid figures and surfaces
\- 3D modelling (for fun): multi-element models of various firearms (ak47, stg44)
\- Liquid simulation (Very rarely): flow of liquid, free surface
\- Some python neural network training
\- He is also into 3D printing if that matters
I wonder if the Quadro will really show a visible difference in this kind of usage, or whether these cards require a really specific use-case to shine and for general population (even when it comes to stuff mentioned above) simply a newer GPU such as RTX (mobile) 4050 (6GB) with a stronger (I think) CPU such as i5-13420H would be a better choice. I mention this particular GPU and CPU because this is what he could get in a new (not pre-owned) laptop at the same pricepoint as the HP Zbook Fury G7 (I think the Zbook is also quite pricey because it is this workstation type of laptop with a bit of a more premium build etc. And I don't know if such high price is still warranted).
I think it may also be possible to get 24GB of RAM at this pricepoint.
I know this question is quite specific (maybe I should ask it on some CAD related subreddit? :)) but maybe someone here will be able to help cause I'm a bit stumped.
Thank you in advance for any help :)
