Can Mike Oldfield be considered one of the first Post-Rock artists?
I've been listening to A LOT of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and late Swans lately, and I am finding some similitudes between these bands and Mike Oldfield first 4 works (and Amarok and Return To Ommadawn). His works are also based on long-term compositions, minimalist, mostly based on the formation of atmospheres with the sounds and the minimalistic melodies, and even ambient sounds at time.
Of course, Oldfield didn't do things like tape recordings or the highly political content GY!BE had and/or the personal lyrics that Swans had. But in terms of the music, I think Mike Oldfield overlaps at least with those 2 bands (and I could mention others, but those 2 are the ones I've been consuming the most lately).
So yeah, if anyone agrees or doesn't, let me know down below! But I'm pretty sure I'm not wrong when I say that Mike Oldfield was onto the Post-Rock train pretty early!
