What is this hardware on my rafters and why might it be causing my roof to leak?
My roof is leaking in two spots which happen to correspond to the only two places that these black metal brackets were used on the rafters. These are on two sides of the same truss. The water seems to be seeping through the top OSB sheet, not originating from the seam.
I don't understand what purpose these brackets serve and I'm thinking they are not being used correctly here.
- The "wings" are flush with the bottom, not the top so they don't make any contact with the OSB.
- The shape suggests they should bend in the middle rather than being flat like this.
- One adjacent truss is identical but lacks these brackets.
- How do you attach the sheathing to the rafter with ~4mm steel between them? Gravity?
- What happens to your shingles when your nail hits the metal? (Spoiler: roof leaks)
The third picture may contain some insight into the competence level of the roofers that did this work. Yes, that's a vent-sized hole in the sheathing with no vent in it.
Thoughts?
