Villain's master plan is doomed because of an unrelated much greater external threat

World of Warcraft: The franchise's most iconic villain, Arthas Menethil, the Lich King, wanted to conquer all of Azeroth and turn it into a frozen wasteland with all life killed and raised into his undead Scourge. Except if he had accomplished this goal, he would have left Azeroth defenseless against the inevitable return of the Burning Legion, since there would be no more adventurers (PCs) to stop them.

A Song of Ice and Fire: Petyr Baelish, aka Littlefinger, is a Machiavellian manipulator and by far the most dangerous player of the Game of Thrones, and is pretty much entirely responsible for the War of the Five Kings. As of the end of ADWD he is the Lord-Paramount of 2 of the Seven Kingdoms, one of which, the Vale, has a completely intact military since it has stayed out of the War of the Five Kings so far. Not to mention he has been hoarding massive amounts of grain, and with winter coming he has the perfect tool to ensure the loyalty of the other regions that have been devastated by the war and will soon be experiencing famine.

Unfortunately for Littlefinger, that winter also happens to be coming with a side of a gargantuan horde of zombies courtesy of the Others beyond the Wall, so unless he has accounted for that (which he most definitely hasn't) all his scheming and manipulations have only weakened the realm he meant to take over against the real threat.
