Interested in buying New/Used Highlander for general use for all seasons (best as possible). Need advice, please!

Let me preface this by saying this is my first reddit post in years, and that I am certainly not too familiar with car shopping.
My wife and I have been looking into getting a Toyota to replace my 2012 Jetta, and between the RAV4, 4Runner, and Highlander, we believe that the Highlander would be a great choice for us (just her and myself, and possibly a large dog, haha!).
We live in New York, closer to the mountains, and sometimes we like to go on scenic drives on back roads, so comfort is a plus.
Additionally, I would be using this for my commute (fairly short, ~20 miles roundtrip), and would need it to be reliable in snow (with the right tires too, I know! I also drive overly cautious)
I have been searching up and down and I cannot seem to pinpoint an exact year to search for. Everybody's got their own opinions, knowledge, and anecdotes.
I would be extremely grateful if anyone here had ANY advice for a not-car-guy like myself! If/when we settle on a car, I'll make a post here!
