Adult fantasy - walled city, beast creatures attack in darkness, murder blamed on monsters, investigator protagonist
Hi!
Looking for an adult fantasy novel I read around 10 years ago. Here's what I remember:
- Pre-industrial walled city/settlement (I think...)
- Beast-like creatures attack people in the darkness outside the walls
- Travellers use lanterns/fire for protection, possibly some kind of special item too
- A murder happens inside the city and gets blamed on the creatures
- Male protagonist, possibly an investigator type (I think...)
- NOT The Painted Man / The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett
