Wicasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum

The Wiscasset, Waterville, and Farmington (WW&F) Railway Museum is a living testament to Maine’s historic “Two-Footer” narrow-gauge railroading era, operating as a vibrant heritage railroad in Alna, just north of Wiscasset. Originally running from 1895 until its collapse during the Great Depression in 1933, the line famously never reached its namesake towns of Waterville or Farmington, but it faithfully served the rural economy of the Sheepscot Valley.  Resurrected from extinction in 1989 by a dedicated team of volunteers, the non-profit WW&F Railway Museum now operates 3.5 miles of beautifully restored, authentic narrow-gauge track. Visitors can step back a century in time by boarding the Sheepscot Valley Steam Train, which features antique wooden passenger cars pulled by vintage steam locomotives, such as the historic 1891 Forney-type No. 9.

https://ridetherails.org/places/astoria-riverfront-trolley/

The Astoria Riverfront Trolley is a quintessential heritage railroad that preserves the industrial and transit soul of Oregon’s oldest city. Operating the historic “Old 300,” a beautifully restored 1913 streetcar originally built for San Antonio, the trolley runs along three miles of former Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway freight tracks. This line is classified as a heritage railroad because it maintains a “living” connection to Astoria’s past, utilizing the same rails that once moved canned salmon and timber during the city’s commercial peak.

We classified this as heritage. What are your thoughts on the trolley being heritage?

The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad offers one of the most spectacular scenic train rides in the South, traversing the dramatic Boston Mountains of the Ozark Plateau on a historic line that includes one of the longest railroad tunnels in the region. The 134-mile round trip between Springdale and Van Buren passes through towering limestone bluffs, dense hardwood forests, and deep river valleys, descending the rugged Ozark escarpment through a series of tight curves and steep grades. The railroad uses vintage 1940s and 1950s streamlined passenger equipment, providing an authentic mid-century railroad experience.

The Alberta Central Railway Museum, located just outside Wetaskiwin, Alberta, is a passionate community effort to preserve and share the history of the Canadian Pacific Railway and its profound impact on the settlement and development of Western Canada. The museum’s centrepiece is a one-mile loop of restored track on which visitors can ride in a magnificently preserved 1926 CPR first-class observation-buffet-sleeper car ‘Mount Avalanche’ — one of the finest surviving examples of vintage transcontinental luxury rail travel in Canada.

Was able to catch 4014 in its home territory, roaring up the canyon, through the Wasatch Mountains, unassisted. Always been a dream to see it here.

Angels Flight Railway, billed as the world’s shortest railway, is a historic funicular in the Bunker Hill district of Downtown Los Angeles that has been carrying passengers since 1901. The two counterbalanced cars — Olivet and Sinai — travel a 298-foot, 33-percent grade between Hill Street at Grand Central Market and the upper station at California Plaza, offering a brief but iconic one-minute ride that has appeared in countless films and books, including the Oscar-winning La La Land. Constructed by Colonel J.W. Eddy and designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #4 in 1962, the railway was disassembled in 1969 for urban redevelopment, stored for nearly three decades, and reopened in 1996 — then painstakingly restored and reopened again in 2017. Today, Angels Flight operates seven days a week from 6:45 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with fares of just $1.50 each way, making it one of Los Angeles’s most accessible and cherished historic landmarks.

The Adirondack Railroad operates scenic excursion trains through the heart of the Adirondack Park in upstate New York, the largest protected wilderness area in the contiguous United States and one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the eastern half of the country. Departing from the historic Utica station, the railroad runs excursions into the deep Adirondack forest along the Mohawk & Malone Railway corridor — a legendary route that once connected New York City to Montreal through the heart of the Adirondack wilderness. The railroad follows the Black River Valley and the Moose River corridor through dense boreal forest, past pristine lakes and wetlands, and into the spectacular Big Moose and Old Forge resort areas. Wildlife viewing along the route is excellent, with common sightings of loons, great blue herons, osprey, white-tailed deer, and, with luck, black bear and moose.
