Follow up or leave it alone?

I am an Electrical Engineer with 2+ years of diagnostic experience with HV batteries. It has been a year since I left the role and began working blue collar. I have recently been actively applying and interviewing for engineering roles again, and have failed to receive an offer after getting to the final round of interviews twice.

I was recently contacted by HR for a battery testing electrical engineer role, and after passing their “sniff” test, I was invited to an on-site interview with all team members last Monday. I really thought it went poorly from a technical perspective but lo and behold, I was promptly emailed the next day saying they would like me to interview over video with the new GM who was starting the following week. That happened this past Friday and I thought it went as well as any interview I’ve had. GM seemed to drill more into my background and eventually stated his role was to make sure the new engineer was a good fit with the existing team as they had hired someone to fill the position but that person did not work out. He asked if I could start immediately (yes), and that they were looking to fill the role ASAP.

So it’s been 6 days now, I haven’t heard anything, and am ruminating to the point of getting physically sick. I need the job for financial stability… my question is, do I reach out to the HR contact and ask for a follow up? Do I leave it be? Does it sound like I am the match they are looking for or will this be another rejection?
