100k tier 1 corporate help desk or 75k small MSP

Backstory: I was laid off 5 months ago from an MSP where I was a tier 2/JR network admin for 1.5 years. (2 years total of MSP experience)

I finally landed a corporate contract for 6-12 months. It’s a tier one paying 100k and I’ve began my first few weeks here already.

Will working a tier 1 hurt my career trajectory? Or should I take an MSP tier 2 role?

MSP role: tier 2+, It’s hybrid but I’d be their 4th tech and they don’t have an office.

I’m told I’ll get a chance to learn a lot, but worried that I’ll be stuck constantly doing onsite low level and not enough project work even though they said they want all their techs to be on the same level, and access to everything.

I’m still interviewing for other roles as I hope I can land a permanent job eventually.

What’s your view on this?

Laid off, got off, offer descended. Finally got a new offer.

A bit of background: I worked for MSPs, several years of experience doing essentially anything. If you’ve worked for an MSP you already know.

Anyways, I got laid off about 6 months ago. As you would imagine I’ve been applying like crazy. I’ve gotten so many interviews for sys admin roles, network admin, network engineer, security roles and general tier 3 support and many things in between.

As an MSP tech, you can essentially transition to most things given the depth and broad knowledge tools we use, BUT you’re not really an expert in one particular area.

Anyways, 3 months in I get an offer for a sys admin role for a large corporate building. Pays 12-15k more than what I was making previously.

1 week before start date they rescind the offer and I’m back to being fucked.

3 months later, I’ve secured another offer. This one pays about 25k more than my previous job. The only draw back is that it’s a step down in technical ability! But it’s a big corporation so I’m hoping I can make good money and build some relationships at minimum.

I’m so so fucking tired I don’t give a shit if it’s a step down in title or tech ability, it pays 6 figs.

Before this I was willing to work for 40-50k just to remain employed!

The market is fucked! I want to add that I still have other interviews lined up just in case but guys, hear me out when I say I’m mentally exhausted that I’m considering staying here at this lower tier for the good pay, maybe if even just for a little while as a collect my sanity again.

I have a network engineer interview and other support role interviews lined up, some are remote and the pay falls between 75-90k but non of those are final stages, I’m just exhausted.

I’m going to do those interviews but once I start my first day at my new job I think I’m just going to lay low for 6-12 months and just take the time to collect myself and get my AZ-104 and then see what comes after that.

I have a decent cert stack already that included CCNA, CompTIA Triad and many others.

Anyways guys, if you’re unemployed hang in there, this field is so fucked up.

TLDR: Laid off, got offer, offer rescinded. Got new offer for 6 figs but a step down in title but I’ll take it, fuck it!

Had 70k job, laid off, got new offer, offer descended.

Hello fellow humans,

So I’ve always been poor, grew up poor and was poor for most of my life. Right after covid I transitioned to IT which changed my life. Initially I made a moderate income of 20-30hr for the first 1-1.5 years. Which was awesome because I used to only make 12-15hr. After about 1.5 years in IT I got bumped to a role with a base pay of 70k (80k total comp). Very grateful and very hungry and determined.

During my 2.5 years in IT I amassed about 8+ certifications. I was like “holy shit, I’m doing it, all those nights all those hours, all that time invested”

Then I get the news, I was laid off.

Applying to about 20-30 places a day. You guessed it, remote, part time, contract, 2 hour commutes, whatever it takes to generate income. Then I get a signed offer for 90k. I’m like “Can I do this?”. I go through the 4 interviews with the CEO, COO all bunch of executives with a multinational company.

I get extended the offer, I sign it. I am tasked with going in and cleaning up the chaos. 1 week from start date I get an email that the offer had been rescinded.

I’m just exhausted. I don’t live lavishly or anything. I drive a 10 year old car, I rent a room, and thank fuck I decided to save money because I’ve been housed due to my savings.

What would have happened if I had a family to support? I feel for those who have many people depending on them.

So here I am, again, back to a place that isn’t new. I’ve been here before, I’ve struggled before and I’ve been without.

Only option is to come back up.

End Rant.

Laid off, Signed new offer, Offer retracted.

Hey all,

I’ve been unemployed for about 2 months. I got laid off from my MSP.

I recently signed an offer for a role paying me 90K. 1 week from my start date I get a notice stating that the offer has been retracted. SOB! I knew something was off.

It’s just been frustrating. Been living off my savings and I’ve decided to not eat 3 out of 7 days of the week, when I do I eat 1 meal.

Some background. I have about 2 years of MSP experience and I do lab a lot on my spare time because I find it entertaining when something makes sense.

I currently interviewed for 2 full remote positions, 3 onsites and and about 4 others that have not reached back out in the last couple weeks. (About 8 interviews the last 3-4 weeks)

Pay range is between 70-95k between the roles.

Keep your heads up and keep grinding.

End rant.

Lost My IT job due to delays.

As you all know, many if not all of us have lost our jobs due to delays. Jobs we’ve worked so hard to obtain.

I’ve been living off my savings and I’ve submitted maybe 200 applications since I got my approval because I had to quit my IT job.

I was getting demotivated because of the frequent interviews that would ghost, recruiters never replying back, etc.

However, recently I got an offer for a multinational company that will be paying me more than my previous role.

It’s not exactly the type of IT I wanted to do but I’m thankful just for a job. I was interviewing for roles paying much less than my previous role and far away just to secure employment.

Can’t make up the “lost” money due to unemployment but now I can start to pick up the pieces again and bring my career back on track.

Hope you all get approved soon, and I hope you all get your jobs back or any job. I waited 200 days for an approval and it feels like I was in a dream where days blended together.

Now I’ve gotten used to eating beans and rice and drinking tap water, I don’t feel like spending money like I used to.

That is all.
