why is it so hard to sell free?
I’ve been offering my services for free in exchange for references for my marketing agency — but due to cognitive bias, people instantly assume it’s a scam. It’s not.
All I need is to understand your business, your goals, and the right information. In return, I’m willing to sit down with you, research your market, plan and execute a real strategy to scale your business.
I don’t want your money. I want you to answer honestly when someone asks if my work helped you. That’s it — just tell the truth.
The real problem is trust. People want proof, but I’m just starting out, so I don’t have a portfolio yet. I have knowledge, I have drive, and I have a genuine interest in behavioral research applied to business — but that doesn’t show up on a résumé when you have zero clients.
And honestly, isn’t that the hardest part of starting anything? You need experience to get clients, but you need clients to get experience.
I think we should normalize exchanging value without money being the middleman — especially at the early stages. Sharing knowledge, giving real strategy, creating with purpose instead of just trying to sell a course or milk people for cash.
We’re so conditioned to expect a hidden agenda that when someone actually offers something real, we reject it before even listening.”
